INGREDIENTS for cookies

1½ cups butter softened

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

5 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

INGREDIENTS for Royal icing

3 cups powdered sugar

¼ cream of tartar

2 large egg whites

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 to 2 teaspoons water

Gather the ingredients for the cookies.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.

Beat in eggs one at a time.

In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Mix dry ingredients with sugar and egg mixture.

Roll dough into disks, cover with plastic wrap, and chill dough for at least one hour or overnight.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.

Place cookies 1-inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets

Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven or until lightly browned on the bottom. Don't overbake. Cool completely.

Gather the ingredients for the royal icing.

Combine the powdered sugar and cream of tartar. Add egg whites and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.

Beat on medium-high speed until thick and glossy. Add 1 teaspoon of water at a time.  The icing should be thick enough to stick to the cookies in an even layer, but not too loose to slide off.
